In Italy the prefecture (from Latin praefectura) is a state body and represent the government at local level, in any administrative province. A prefect is put in charge of each prefecture. Prefects represent the government at provincial level, but they are also in charge of public security, since they supervise security and public order and carry out administrative duties, too. They also supervise provincial administrative authorities and other administrative functions carried out by the State. The Prefecture located in the main town of a region (in Italian, capoluogo) carries out several activities linked to its state representation functions. When to contact a prefecture: in case of fine appeal, qualifications, self-declarations, document legalizations, matters linked to immigration, movement permits, gun licences, to take Italian citizenship or to change one’s name and/or surname.
