Municipality of Rome

The municipality of Rome covers a surface area of 1.285,31 Km². It is the largest municipality in Italy, subdivided into 19 relatively autonomous districts administered by a President. The division into districts (in Italian, municipi) has an administrative relevance, whereas the one into quarters (the so called rioni) is exclusively of historical nature.

The current seat of Rome’s town council is Palazzo Senatorio, built in the 12th century upon the ruins of the ancient Tabularium, the old Rome State Archives. The building, embellished with a majestic double flight stair created by Michelangelo between 1542 and 1554, has undergone some refurbishments and repairs.

The town council, headed by Mr Marco Pomarici, carries out its duties inside Palazzo Senatorio, where it meets in the elegant Hall Giulio Cesare. Sessions are public and can be attended upon receiving a free pass at the reception. Whoever wants to know more about the historical origins of the town council can consult the Archivio Capitolino, with plenty of documents from the 12th century to our days.

THE MAYOR

The current mayor of Rome is Mr Gianni Alemanno, born in Bari on March 3rd 1958, who belongs to the PDL (People of Freedom) political party. Alemanno was appointed mayor of Rome on April 28th 2008 with 53,66% votes.

THE TOWN HALL

The Campidoglio hill is one of the seven hills of Rome, which are part of Rome’s foundation legend. This hill used to be inhabited since the Bronze age and, possibly, a temple to Giove Capitolino was located here previously. The town hall is located in Via del Campidoglio 1, in Piazza del Campidoglio, close to the Musei Capitolini. The closest underground station is COLOSSEO.
