Rome has got a typical Mediterranean climate: temperate, pleasant and never too cold. It is located nearly half way between the sea and the Appennini chain. The best seasons to enjoy Rome are spring and autumn, when the climate is more temperate and changeable. SEASON:During spring the climate is unstable and it is not unlikely to bump into heavy showers and unsteady temperatures, especially during the first part of the season. However, in early May, summer begins to peep out with the first heatwaves, alternating with some cold spell till the end of June, when the high pressure determines hot and humid summers, particularly close in places located far from the sea. In September summer begins to fade away and showers occur from time to time, increasing more and more during October and November, when temperatures start to go down. Winter climate enters between the end of November and the beginning of December with cold temperatures, above all in Northern Italy. Nevertheless, winters are quite temperate and dry and it’s not that common to see a snowfall. Rome’s metropolitan area can be split up into three different microclimates: close to the coasts (near Fiumicino), the central areas and the Urbe (the most central and ancient part of Rome), where climate is colder than in the other areas during winter and it’s very close during summer. Different winds blow in Rome: from north, north-east and north-west winds to south-west ones. Koppen climate classification numbers Rome inside the Csa group, which includes temperate middle-latitude climates (very hot and quite dry summers). Three weather stations for climate survey are located in Rome: the weather station of Roma Centro, the Station of Rome Monte Mario, located at 143 m above sea level, and the weather station of Roma Urbe. ADVICE: In order to get the best of Rome, if you go over the summer you’d better wear something light and comfortable, not to suffer from closeness. You’d better wear a cap as well. The rainiest months are April and November, so you’d better have an umbrella in your bag.
