During the first centuries from the foundation of the city, free women were denied political rights and slaves, who had to work hard and in backbreaking conditions, were even considered as part of the family property.
A woman used to spend most of her time inside the house. Rich women had also the possibility to have a stroll freely or to take part in a banquet together with their husband. Those who had married just one man were called univire, but there were also women with more husbands and the concubines.
