Quartiere Coppedè in Rome

This urban area is erroneously called quartiere Coppedè, even though it is not an administrative division of Rome; it presents weird and suggestive buildings designed by the architect Gino Coppedè at the beginning of the 20th century. 18 palaces and 27 buildings are located around the central Piazza Mincio, from which 5 streets begins, creating a precise staff.

You enter the “quartiere” via an elegant arch in via Tagliamento, that boasts a splendid wrought iron chandelier. In the square just after the arch there’s the Fontana delle Rane (Fountain of the Frogs), possibly a tribute to Bernini. If you take a look around you can’t help being surprised at the buildings’ style: elegant liberty villas richly decorated, also with magic-esoteric symbols, Baroque influences and Medieval elements.

Interesting spots are the Palazzina del Ragno (Palace of the Spider) and the so called Villini delle Fate (Villas of the Fairies); they are private and closed to the public, but well visible from the square.
