Walking around the quartiere EUR

The acronym EUR stands for Ente Autonomo Esposizione Universale di Roma (Autonomous body Universal Exposition of Rome), the big exposition planned for 1942 that never took place. The quartiere, currently named Europa, hosts several Italian Rationalist style buildings, erected between the 1930s and the 1940s, such as the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana (Building of the Italian Civilization), the Palazzo dei Congressi (Conference Building), the Archivio Centrale dello Stato (State Central Archives) and the Palalottomatica.

Nowadays, EUR boasts 5 beautiful parks: the best one is the Parco Centrale (Central Park), with an artificial lake and the Giardino delle Cascate (Garden of the Waterfalls), embellished with natural stones and rocks. Inside the Parco Centrale there’s also the Teatro Verde, which hosts several events during the summer.

As to the other 4 parks, the Parco del Turismo (Park of the Tourism) presents a big stele-shaped fountain, the Parco del Ninfeo a fountain of the same name, the Parco degli Eucalipti was once owned by Trappist monks who used these plants to make elixirs, and the Luneur is a big funfair but it’s currently closed.
