Although Rome’s splendors date back to ages prior to the Medieval era, inside and nearby the city there are some fascinating castles. Here is a list of the main castles in Rome:CASAL DE’ PAZZIVia Ciciliano No. 06 24404006 By reservation only. During the Renaissance this castle used to be dwelled by the well-known family of Pazzi, famous for the so called Pazzi conspiracy (1474). The building is an ancient farmhouse, whose origin is perhaps ghibelline, which has then been enriched with a tower and some other elements.

This beautiful castle used to be a papal villa situated in a big estate, not far from the Tiber. It presents a crenellated surrounding wall and an elegant fountain in the inner yard. Worthy of a visit is also the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist. CASTELLO DI GIULIO II – ANCIENT OSTIAPiazza della Rocca, 16 – Ostia Antica No. 06 56358024 Visits under the supervision of a clerk only. The castle was built in 1483 by order of the future Pope Julius II by renovating and enlarging old buildings previously erected on that ground. CASTELLO SCANDELUZZAVia Scandeluzza, 11 No. 06 61561840 This elegant 17th century castle, once property of the noble family of Pellegrini, is located not far from Rome historical centre. It has now been turned into a B&B but can be visited upon request. I CASTELLI ROMANIThe label Castelli Romani (Rome castles) refers to the residential settlements of the Colli Albani (Alban hills), located nearby Rome. The name is due to the numerous fortifications built here in the past, some of which are still visible. The most remarkable are the Abbazia di San Nilo (San Nilo abbey) in Grottaferrata, the Palazzo Vescovile in Frascati and the Castello di Molare in Grottaferrata. |
