The Teatro Argentina was inaugurated in 1732 with the “Berenice” by Domenico Sarro and is currently one of oldest and most prestigious theatres of the city. It was the first theatre to stage, in 1816, the “Barber of Seville” by Gioacchino Rossini, a well-known Italian composer.
It has been enlarged and restored over the years; nevertheless its bent for prose, opera and symphonic performances has always been kept intact. The vast internal room is horseshoe-shaped and has gods and five series of galleries. It is seat to the foundation Fondazione Teatro di Roma and hosts the Museo Storico del Teatro (Theatre Historical Museum).
