The Galleria Spada is set in an annex of the wonderful Palazzo Spada, built in 1540 and renowned for its amazing façade with stucco sculptural decorations. The works, exhibited in 4 rooms, mainly come from the collection of Cardinal Bernardino Spada (1594-1661), lately expanded by his next of kins. The paintings are shown after the 17th century style, frame-to-frame, and the rooms are embellished with period furniture. Titian’s Portrait of a Violinist, Artemisia Gentileschi’s The Virgin and Child and Guercino’s Portrait of Cardinal Bernardino Spada are among the most invaluable works exhibited in this collection. Palazzo Spada0 and the Gallery have been state-owned since 1927 and the palace is currently the seat of the Consiglio di Stato (Council of State).
