Via Sannio begins in piazza San Giovanni, in the borough of the same name, close to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano. In the local market taking place in this street vendors mainly sell clothing in covered stalls with loads of second-hand and name branded articles. The range of choice is very wide: from theatrical costumes to second-hand leather jackets, fake name brand articles, shoes and military clothes. Moreover, a section of the market has also bed linen, tablecloths and blankets.
Before entering the real market there are illegal stalls just outside, where vendors display their articles even on the pavements: this section doesn't belong to via Sannio market. A distinguishing feature of Italian vendors is their way of selling: they try to catch your attention shouting and to persuade you that their stuff is the best and the most convenient in the market. Shopping in Via Sannio means first of all being careful with what you buy, checking quality and authenticity before, whenever possible. As a matter of fact, it is not unlikely to find perfectly counterfeited articles, sold as if they were original.
Just one advice: negotiate! Here in via Sannio you will get good bargains if you negotiate with the vendors, preferably going in early morning so as to avoid to find too many people rummaging around the stalls. When the vendor tells the price, usually people here ask for half that price (or even less), until you get to a convenient agreement for both the vendor and the buyer. Watch out: resist the temptation of playing the three-card monte, where you win if the card you’ve chosen at the beginning is picked up when the cards are covered. You might think it is a matter of luck, but…no, it is just a swindle!
