The ristorante Sora Lella is perhaps one of the few restaurants in the centre of Rome where you can still taste authentic regional cuisine of Lazio. It is a historical restaurant, currently run by the son of Sora Lella, who was the sister of Aldo Fabrizi, a famous Italian post-war period comedian. It is situated in the gracious Tiberine Island, half way between Trastevere and the Jewish Ghetto, and has three rooms with 60 total places upon two levels.
The philosophy of this place is unequivocal: fostering regional cuisine and those traditional dishes that you don’t really find anymore anywhere else, enhancing old and typical tastes of local tradition, without neglecting something more contemporary.
The menu is very rich and the bread is the one of the Antico Forno Roscioli, an important Rome bakery, and is always fresh. They propose two main menus: the “Tipico romano”, with frittata with seasonal vegetables, fettuccine pasta with tomato sauce, braised pork tenderloin, chicory with anchovy sauce, and the “Vegetariano”, with giuncata cheese, ravioli pasta with cacio cheese black pepper and Roman mint, baked layers of aubergines tomato and cheese, and ricotta cheese.
Otherwise, choose a delicious first course among tonnarelli pasta “alla cuccagna” (with sausages, walnuts and bacon), gnocchi pasta “all’amatriciana” (with tomato sauce, black pepper and fried bacon) or rigatoni pasta “alla carbonara” (with eggs, black pepper and fried bacon), pasta with chickpeas and clams or pasta with beans. As to second courses, don’t miss the veal tripe, the lamb chasseur and the pollo alla romana (chicken with guanciale, marjoram and San Marzano tomatoes) with pepperoni.
The wine list is really wide, with more than 200 different types. To conclude your meal you could choose a home-made dessert (ricotta cheese cake with sour cherry jam is truly exquisite) or a good home-made ice-cream. You can reserve your places in advance by phone.
