The beautiful Complesso di S.Spirito in Sassia (or Saxia) was erected in 727 BC by order of the Saxon king Ine. At first it was a welcoming centre (schola sacorum) for Wessex pilgrims who used to go to Rome to visit St. Peter’s tomb. In the 12th century a church was built close to the contiguous hospital and was put under the control of the Cavalieri Ospitalieri.

The chiesa di S.Spirito (S.Spirito Church) that you can visit today is a 15th century reconstruction by order of Pope Sixtus IV. It has a two-level plaster façade, with a big circular window on its top. The interior boasts a central nave with ten chapels, adorned with precious frescos.
