The Ara Pacis Augustae is a majestic sacrificial altar erected during the 9th century BC by emperor Augustus and dedicated to the Roman goddess Peace. It was erected to honor Augustus triumphal return from Gaul and Hispania, where he had founded a lot of colonies. It was initially built in Campo Marzio, an important symbolic locality in ancient Rome to celebrate its victories, and is an outstanding exemplar of Roman classic art.

Nowadays the Ara Pacis is situated inside a modern museum realized by Richard Meier & Partners Architects on the Tiber’s bank. The monument was completely reconstructed in 1938 to restore its original splendor. Leaving aside the altar, the museum is worth visiting since it often hosts interesting temporary exhibitions.
