Lumsa (Libera Università Maria Santissima Assunta) is a private university with campuses in Rome, Palermo, Caltanissetta, Taranto and Gubbio. It was founded in 1939, which makes it the second oldest university in Rome, has three faculties (Humanities and Philosophy, Education Sciences and Law) and is a Catholic inspired institution.
At first its mission was to train nuns, but lately, in 1967, it was opened to laic female students as well and then became a university in 1989. Its Statute asserts that the university main goal is to promote a comprehensive education based on Christian values; it fosters a cultural, technical and scientific individual education which encompasses the humanistic view of human existence and a consistent study path to build one’s working future.
Lumsa graduates usually find a job in teaching, institutions, freelance sectors or in public administration. The Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy has its own press agency called “Lumsa News”, which trains would-be journalists in a 24-month course.
